ROYAL MARINES HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Supporting the Research, Collection and Promotion of Corps History

Formed in 1964, the tercentenary year of the Corps, to encourage research and stimulate an interest in the history of the Royal Marines. It is an independent charity with strong links to the serving Corps, the National Museum of the Royal Navy and to the RMA-Royal Marines Charity.

The purpose of the RMHS is to ‘educate the public and members of the Corps in the history and traditions of the Royal Marines’, and it does this by encouraging and publishing research, providing a focus for communication and a source of historical knowledge, and enhancing collections and historical records.

Patron: Commandant General Royal Marines

President: Major General J H A Thompson CB OBE

Our Books

The RMHS has published over 50 books and each year publishes two copies of its journal, ‘The Sheet Anchor’.

We have an extensive library dedicated to Corps History and members can access the larger archives of the National Museum of the Royal Navy for research. We also run a vibrant Facebook group where over 3500 members are active and assist with research enquiries.

Contact

Our Facebook page is the quickest way to get in touch with us and ask questions of our 4000 digital members. Many have particular expertise and experience of the RM Corps and its history. We are not able to complete research on your behalf and we are afraid that we do not have access to indivduals’s service records.
